Luck of the Irish Cupcake!
March 8, 2012
The luck of the Irish is in the air…and if you’ve been charmed, you may have the opportunity to get Kate Murray as your Instructor! Over the past few semesters, students have become familiar with Murray’s “surprise” Guest Speaker that usually takes place during the second or third week of class at the Berks Technical Institute. In Murray’s Career Development course, college students explore their passions and motivations, their career goals, and their personal learning styles through in-depth self exploration and focused critical, creative, and practical thinking. Students examine how their mind works, learn essential time management and resume writing skills, and focus on networking through technology and social media in their job search.
Jen Martello, owner of the Berks County small business, Fairy Cake [cupcakes] based in Douglassville, PA, visited Murray’s class last evening to speak about the importance of making a career out of something you love. Having worked for nearly 10 years in a traditional job setting, Martello decided to take a risk because she wanted to spend her life doing something special. In today’s economy, when everyone is cutting back on luxuries, Martello decided to turn her passion for creativity into something uplifting for everyone. With a long family history of baking, she transformed her focus to research, development, and marketing of a superior product with vivid creativity that is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. Her focus is on attention to the details; by using the freshest locally available ingredients and baking only the day before she delivers, Martello is able to offer the best tasting product when compared to some of the other local cupcake bakers who actually freeze their products. “The difference is in the taste” says course instructor, Kate Murray, and the students agreed, “you can tell these were freshly made.” Martello also takes the time to create custom theme designs out of sugar fondant, so the cakes not only taste delectable, they look stunning as well.
If you’re on the fence about going back to school, don’t wait another minute; with an education, anything is possible. See for yourself, plan to attend an open house at BTI to explore your passions, and don’t forget to have a cupcake along the way!
