Yes, really. This is a thing. Just search the term blogging niche ideas and you’ll see it reveals over 750 searches every single month for people looking for ideas about how to find a profitable blog topic so they can make money with a blog.
But can your blog be profitable if it’s not your life’s purpose?
Blogging is the new American dream job, but discovering your true purpose and nailing down your niche are essential to helping you gain clarity much faster. Once you have that clarity, it will be easier to follow these tips on how to “write like a blogger” to grow your audience.
I used to be a “corporate yes girl” and I learned the hard way that I wasn’t blogging like a “blogger”…I was blogging like a business. It was taking a long time to monetize my blog and I couldn’t figure out why. I had the systems in place, I had visitors, but people weren’t converting. I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
The year was 2010. I finally began to recognize that I wasn’t “writing” for the right audience…I was writing like a “corporate” blogger, and while that worked just find at the time to grow a “corporate” blog, it was getting me nowhere fast with my own blog.
Fast forward 9 years and more than a few lessons learned, and I’m confident these techniques will help you grow your business…especially if you’re making the transition from corporate employee to blogger. The reality is, most of us have to work, we don’t have a choice, the bills have to get paid. Maybe you started this adventure because you heard that starting a blog is a great way to make a passive income. Maybe you’ve already tried it but you’re not having as much success as you thought you would.

When you hear the words “passive income stream” uttered by so many people in the online space, it sounds quite luxurious. A part-time income where you can open your laptop any time of the day or night and receive notifications that a few thousand dollars a month is pouring into your bank account. Sounds fantastic right?
Damn right, it’s possible, and blogging is what makes it possible for our voice to be heard far and wide. We may have to multi-task the laundry, groceries, and getting the kids where they need to go, but we are strong…we are doers…we get shit done!

How to Write Like a Blogger
Did you see how I appealed to your inner Girlboss with some really specific details about life, family, and entrepreneurship? That is an example of how a blogger accomplishes a subconscious emotional appeal with words. It’s an example of how to “write” like a blogger.
Some people may be turned off by the fact that I used the letters “AF” while others just laughed to themselves. It’s okay to be a bit polarizing, in fact blogging allows you to be your authentic self and if people like it, they continue reading. If they don’t then they leave. That’s completely okay because you want your tribe to be made up of people who genuinely care about what you have to say.
I’m completely turned off by bloggers who are too “salesy” with their blog. I don’t want to start reading something without any substance and then see a link to an affiliate program or have products and services showed down my throat. Even corporate blogging like that doesn’t work.
Before you can understand how to write like the Girlboss blogger you know you are, you want make sure that you’re get crystal clear about your audience. Maybe you just started blogging and you don’t have an audience yet. Maybe you haven’t started blogging yet and you don’t know why you need an audience. The Blogging Niche is the First Step
This word niche is wayyyyyy over used in the blogosphere lately but it does have it’s place in the process so I have to address it. The most important first step of turning your blog into an online business is to get hyper-focused. You may have heard that choosing a focus for your blog and online business is the most important part of blogging. That’s not to say that Lifestyle bloggers can’t be profitable, but what I’ve found in my experience teaching others how to blog is that most people who are just starting out with creating an online business are looking for the fastest way to monetization. The bottom line is that the fastest path to monetizing your blog is to build a targeted audience who cares about your topic.
Yes, it can happen. But it takes a lot of work up-front. A lot. Like, more than you think. I know what might be thinking…I have all the time in the world right now to make it happen, so I just need a game plan, a step-by-step instruction guide and I’m in.
I’ll say it again because it’s the most important thing you need to know…focusing on one very specific topic will give you the fastest path toward your goals.
Don’t let your inner voice become clouded by what you see other people pinning on Pinterest.
Let me break it down into an example so that you’re crystal clear on the whole choosing a niche thing.
Blogger A writes about anything they want — travel, their life, their kids, books, occasionally a plant-based recipe.
Blogger B is all about the plant-based lifestyle. They’re writing recipes, factual information, maybe even an e-book about getting started on a plant-based journey.
So, let’s say someone sees saw a gorgeous picture of a plant-based casserole on Pinterest. This person is your potential audience right? She sees the gorgeous picture and she’s totally stoked because she now has a dinner recipe for tonight. She pins it to her recipe board and clicks on it to see more about the ingredients and preparation.
If that recipe takes her to Blogger A, then she might read the recipe, love it, and decide to click around on Blogger A’s website. There’s a chance she’ll fall in love with Blogger A, if she has kids and likes to travel to the same places as Blogger A, but it’s MUCH more likely that she’ll click around, see blog posts about things that don’t really interest her, and then leave.
This definitely doesn’t mean that Blogger A’s articles about her kids and travels are bad…it just means that it’s not the right fit for the person who was interested in the plant-based recipe.
On the other side of the coin, if that plant-based recipe pin takes the reader to Blogger B, then she might read the recipe, love it, and click around, just like in the first example.
So what’s the difference?
When this person clicks around on Blogger B’s website, she finds tons of useful plant-based recipes, gardening, composting, physical fitness, and other information related to leading a plant-based lifestyle, it totally rocks her world! If she’s really into plant-based (which she probably is if she took the time to click over from Pinterest), then she will most likely click around on other recipes, follow all your social media accounts, and share it with her vegetarian friends who will then do the exact.same.thing!
What I hear most often from those who are new to setting up an online business is that they don’t actually know who their ideal reader is. If you are that person, then it’s time to get crystal clear.
The big takeaway about the Blog Niche
If you want to make money blogging, you’re going to want to narrow your blog’s focus, and that my fellow Girlboss is the niche.
But focus on what…exactly? Start with what your expertise is. If you’ve had a corporate career already, you’re actually two steps ahead because you likely have knowledge or expertise that your average neighbor does not.
Focus on your passion.
Maybe you don’t have many years of a professional life yet, but instead you have many years of homesteading with your mom…canning tomato sauce that you grew in your garden. Perhaps you taught yourself how to make bows for cheerleaders and you’re damn good at it, or you can create jewelry like a pro. Whatever it is that you can go on and on about, that’s a good topic to blog about.

The moral of the story is, when your blog has a specific focus, you’ll grow your audience (and likely your income) much faster than if you choose to write about a variety of different topics.
Narrowing your focus might sound a little daunting at first, but I promise you that if you want to grow your income through blogging, it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself.
Write Like a Blogger
Now that you’ve got the whole blog topic/niche thing figured out, you can really zero in on who your ideal audience is.
You need to write like you’re talking to your BFF.
Because if your BFF has a problem that you can solve, you would give her real, actionable, heartfelt advice.
Here are some ways you can write like a blogger:
1. Tell a story
The storytelling technique is even being embraced in corporate settings now as a way to connect with your audience emotionally, because emotion is what triggers purchase decisions. Ultimately, you’re blogging because you want your reader to do something…and the only way they will “do” something is if they know, like, and trust you first. So give them a reason to get to know you.
2. Do not use Clickbait
Think about it this way: nobody wants to listen to (read the blog of) a “know it all” so I always cringe when I see pins that say things like “How I made $10,000 Last Month” and then I click over to read it and they write super generic advice like “all you have to do is sell a high ticket affiliate offer”. That’s vague AF and it didn’t help me one ounce, it just completely wasted my time (which I don’t have a lot of to begin with) and now I will NEVER read your blog again. And if you thought that would make me sign up for your list you are dead wrong.
Back to where I was before.
This is exactly why you don’t want to write that way. “Clickbait” is when a catchy headline makes someone click, but they don’t really find what they’re looking for. It’s spammy, and despite the best efforts of genuine bloggers and good algorithms, it’s still out there. Unfortunately for people who use that writing technique, they will never actually be successful in building a sustainable online business. They might be successful in getting people to click once, but when people recognize the clickbait, they won’t be back.
3. Get to the Point
You can give genuinely helpful advice, but aim to do it in a way that is clear and to the point. Some bloggers start off by writing “how to” articles because this is a great way to hone in on your ability to get clear about what it is you are helping people with. There is a fine line between the story and getting to the point of your article, so if the objective of your blog is to make money, you’ll need to aim to keep personal details to a minimum and write what is necessary to help move your reader to their goal. This can be controversial because some bloggers believe that “it’s your’ blog and you can write whatever you want” and this is true….if you don’t care about monetization! So if you want to make money with your blog, you need to treat your blog like a business, not like an online journal. Write your deepest thoughts and wishes in your personal journal….not the blog that you want to make money from. Capiscimi? (That means “understand?” in Italian.)
As you can see, knowing who your audience is, what they’re struggling with, and how you can help them is a key component of writing like a blogger.
