“Your website got how many visits yesterday?”
I finally got my sister’s attention.
She had been rolling her eyes at me for months as I told her how Pinterest was the social media platform that was driving massive amounts of traffic to my website.
She thought I was crazy. How can you make money from Pinterest?!
She’s responsible for a team of almost 30 designers, and works a ridiculous amount of hours with a ridiculous amount of stress for a fortune 100 company. Presently, she has a 2 year old (and would love to be blessed with more children).
I left a corporate marketing job after 14 years for the flexibility to work from home so that I could be a better mom and a better wife.
She thought that because I worked from “home” that I just browsed Pinterest all day and I didn’t really work. So in hindsight, I’m not sure whether I set out to conquer the strategy using Pinterest for Business just to prove her wrong, or because I really do love browsing home decor and fashion trends.
I had been using Google Ads and Facebook to try to grow my business for quite some time. I had some early success (from about 2014 to about 2016…back when you just couldn’t lose doing Facebook ads) but in 2017 that all changed.
The Rise of Bro Marketing…
If you’ve been online for any amount of time you’ve seen it…the kind of online marketing where people post a picture of themselves with a Ferrari or at some luxury vacation destination followed by a few paragraphs trying to convince you about how “easy” it is to live the laptop lifestyle and sip wine on the beach. It’s followed by a free webinar in exchange for your email address. And it’s not just men…women do this too.
You see, every guy (or gal) who posts these kinds of ads on Facebook, and links you to a horribly designed clickbait sales-page that talks about “secret funnel hacking” doesn’t actually realize that he’s drinking the same “dirty pond water” that his mentors drank.
In the industry, we call this “bro” marketing.
What most of the “bros” don’t realize is that Facebook took away the most important part of Facebook Ads (it used to be called “power editor”) when they unified their ad platform.
Stay with me here, it’s important to understand how the bros do it, so you can instead create a rock solid foundation and conversion strategy and master the nuances of the online business model…because this is a much more sustainable strategy than some of these other online marketing tactics.
And guess what? “Bro marketing” doesn’t work anymore. It worked in 2014 when 3 people were doing it, but now that Russell Brunson convinced every newbie to online marketing that spending $100 and making $200 was a sustainable business model there are a lot of really bad sales funnels floating around. Don’t get me wrong…I use the product. In fact, it really is a great piece of software. But that’s just the point…having a tool if you don’t know exactly what to do with it isn’t going to help you.
Why Pinterest Training?
There are a few reasons, namely because Facebook Audience Targeting doesn’t work anymore. Remember when Facebook was in the news quite a bit for privacy violations in late 2017? That’s exactly the time when they took away the detailed audience targeting which, for small business, was the MOST important part of being able to get phenomenal results with Facebook ads.
So, what does that mean for small business now? Well just ask any small business owner if they get good engagement on their Facebook Business Page or with their Facebook ads and they will tell you they do not.
If they tell you they do, they’re lying. Because I’ve been around since the times where you could get a cost per lead for less than .40 cents.
Unless you have wildly deep pockets, Facebook is not the place to market a small business, especially when you’re first starting out.
Not to mention, unless you live under a rock, people are immune to Facebook ads now, especially the ones where someone writes some big, long dissertation. Nobody has time to read that.
But here’s something else…when you share your blog, or your Pin, or your offer on another social platform, it shouldn’t say: “A Pin For You” in the meta-data. Want to know how to fix that? Keep reading.
A lot of marketers like to talk about being “in the right place at the right time” with online marketing and advertising, but the reality is, online marketing is not easy to do even if you’re a marketer, so if you’re not a marketer by profession, it can seem even more overwhelming.
And your “Facebook Ads Dude” well, he drank the dirty pond water because it isn’t a technical problem. Any legit digital marketer can show you what buttons to push inside the ads manager, but if you aren’t willing to refine your system and build a dynamic customer journey based on attraction marketing, then knowing what buttons to push won’t save you.
So, what’s next? Well I’m going to talk to you about how Pinterest is different of course, but first, there’s some groundwork.
You need to build the foundation. Because if you don’t have a foundation in place first, you can’t zero in and amplify.
Because you can’t squeeze a cold audience through a crappy looking clickbait landing page and expect your offer to convert
You can’t expect people to surrender their email address for an opt-in if you haven’t actually delivered any value to them first, and
You can’t force people to sit through a fluff-ball, automated, hour-long webinar with nothing but a bad sales pitch at the end and expect your offer to convert!

How to Become A Pinterest Manager and/or Master the Platform

You have talent! You’re not drinking from the dirty pond. Maybe you’ve been working for a while and you know you have something special to offer. Or maybe you already manage social media for business, but you’re looking to master the Pinterest platform.
You’ve heard you can make money blogging, creating content and vlogs for YouTube, or creating your own digital product. These all play into the Pinterest Manager role.
Pinterest is very different from other social media platforms because of the “code under the hood.”
What does that mean?
Facebook and Twitter are pretty much a place to stake your claim, but the content doesn’t live on as it does with a search engine such as Google or Pinterest. That’s the what I mean by “under the hood.”
People typically use Facebook and Twitter to write a post and tell the world what they’re thinking. You expect interaction. You thrive on interaction. You have conversations and communicate with people.
That’s not Pinterest.
Pinterest is an introverts dream.
You browse photos of whatever you’re interested in, and perhaps you’ll even visit a blog or make a purchase. You don’t really “interact” or have conversations with anyone on Pinterest. This is by design.
Those smart folks at Pinterest use something called Python. It’s a type of code that search engines like Google use. When you type a word or phrase into Google, it returns results that it thinks that you’re looking for.
This works the same way with Pinterest, except Pinterest returns search results in Pictures. (Obviously Google can do that too, but it’s different because the people who are using Pinterest are explicitly expecting to browse legitimate photos of topics they care about and save them for later).
So in comparison to Pinterest, the other social networks show you a post for a few days if you’re lucky, and then it pretty much disappears (unless you go looking for it).
It doesn’t work that way with Pinterest. When your picture (or Pin) is optimized properly, it will live on the platform and have the potential to show up when someone is searching for it for many years. In fact, my best performing pin is actually from 2014!
No way! No freakin’ way!
Ohhhh, yes, purely organic, and it’s not even a vertical pin!
Pinterest is 100% the best-kept secret in online marketing!
In fact, it’s still the most under-utilized social platform according to a social media survey conducted by Buffer in 2019!
Earning a living by using Pinterest, like everything else in life, is all about the effort you put in.
